Waves, charcoal, speckling paste on canvas, 36 in x36 in, 2024
Waves explores the movement of water and its interaction with wind and time—both invisible elements. I recorded a video of ocean waves at a beach in Santa Cruz and extracted multiple still images from different moments in the sequence. The drawing consists of layered elements: the first layer is a sculptural, rough surface based on one still image; the second layer is a different moment from the same video, rendered in an impressionistic manner; and the final layers feature line drawings that trace movement from various time points, capturing the shifting interplay between wind and water. The resulting image conveys an uncertain, dynamic relationship between the visible present and the unseen forces of different temporal moments—serving as a metaphor for the uncertainty of human perception and the presence of God.
